Bài Chắn

This is a personal project to digitize Bài Chắn — a Vietnamese tile/card game I grew up watching my grandparents, parents, and aunts/uncles play. The goal is simple: make it easy for family to play together again, even when they’re not in the same room.

Family playing Chắn together

Basic premise (for non-players)

Chắn is played with a shared deck of tiles/cards. Players take turns drawing and discarding, trying to form specific combinations (pairs/sets) in their hand. If you’ve played Mahjong or Rummy, the “feel” is similar: you’re building structure while reading what others might be collecting.

The full rules and scoring can get deep — and different families play with different house rules. This app is being built to match the rules my family uses.

Rules (high-level)

  • Players: typically 4–5 players (we’re implementing both).
  • On your turn you draw (or sometimes claim the previous discard), then discard a tile.
  • You can optionally claim the next player’s discard if it helps your hand (“Ăn”).
  • Some plays can interrupt out of turn (“Chíu”), depending on the hand.
  • When your hand meets the winning condition, you can declare a win (“Ù”).

Note: the current Dev build is an early prototype. We’re iterating toward full gameplay.
